What is a birth chart?

A birth chart (also called a natal chart) is a circular map of the sky drawn for the exact moment, date, and place of your birth. It shows the positions of the Sun, Moon, and eight other planets against the wheel of twelve zodiac signs, divided into twelve life-area sections called houses. Together these placements describe the energetic blueprint you arrived with.

Where most people know only their Sun sign, the full chart contains a hundred more layers — your Moon (how you feel), your Venus (how you love), your Mars (how you fight and want), and so on across all ten planets and twelve houses.

How to read your birth chart

Read your chart in three layers. Planets are the actors — they answer “what energy.” Signs are the costumes — they answer “in what style.” Housesare the stages — they answer “in what life area.” A planet in a sign in a house tells the full story: e.g., Mars (drive) in Aries (direct) in the 10th house (career) means an ambitious, fast-moving professional life.

The Big Three: Sun, Moon, and Rising

The three placements most worth knowing are your Sun (core identity), Moon (emotional nature), and Rising sign (outer persona, also called the Ascendant). Modern astrology calls these your “Big Three” because together they describe the public, the private, and the bridge between them. The Sun is who you are; the Moon is how you feel; the Rising is how others first meet you.

Understanding the 10 planets

The SunYour Core Identity

The Sun represents your conscious self, your ego, your life force, and the path of growth you came here to walk. The sign your Sun sits in colors how you express your essential identity — bold, sensual, curious, dreamy, etc. Your Sun is the answer to "who am I, fundamentally?"

The MoonYour Emotional Nature

The Moon governs your inner world — feelings, instincts, what you need to feel safe, your relationship with home and family. It is the most personal placement after the Sun. Your Moon sign reveals how you process emotion when no one is watching.

MercuryHow You Think & Communicate

Mercury rules speech, learning, logic, and the way you connect ideas. It shapes how you write, listen, debate, and absorb information. Your Mercury sign tells you whether you think fast and loud (Aries) or carefully and visually (Taurus) and everything in between.

VenusHow You Love

Venus is the planet of love, attraction, beauty, and pleasure. Your Venus sign describes what you find beautiful, how you give affection, and what kind of partner draws you in. Reading Venus is essential for understanding your romantic style.

MarsHow You Act & Desire

Mars rules drive, action, anger, and sexual energy. It is the inner athlete, warrior, and lover. Your Mars sign reveals how you pursue what you want, how you handle conflict, and the texture of your physical desire.

JupiterWhere You Grow

Jupiter is the planet of expansion, luck, philosophy, and meaning. Wherever Jupiter sits in your chart, life invites you to grow generously. Your Jupiter sign hints at where you find joy, optimism, and your sense of purpose.

SaturnWhere You're Tested

Saturn rules structure, discipline, fear, and time. It marks the area of life where you must build slowly, take responsibility, and earn your authority. Saturn placements ache before they bless — but they bless deeply once mastered.

UranusWhere You Break Rules

Uranus is the planet of revolution, awakening, sudden change, and innovation. It represents where you are wired to think differently and where breakthroughs happen. Uranus is a generational planet, but its house placement is intensely personal.

NeptuneWhere You Dream

Neptune dissolves boundaries, governs dreams, art, intuition, and spiritual longing. It also rules confusion and illusion — the places we romanticize or avoid. Your Neptune placement shows where reality blurs into something larger and where you transcend the literal.

PlutoWhere You Transform

Pluto is the planet of death, rebirth, power, and the unconscious. It rules the experiences that strip you down to your truth and rebuild you. Pluto's house placement marks the area of life that will undergo the deepest transformation.

The 12 houses in your birth chart

Where the planets are the actors, the houses are the stages they perform on. Each of the twelve houses governs a specific area of life — self, money, communication, home, romance, work, partnership, intimacy, philosophy, career, community, and the unconscious.

Your outer persona, physical body, and first impressions. The lens through which you meet the world.
